With Liberty and Justice For All

I think God may be gay.  For many years, I’ve been involved in various Gay Pride festivals around the country where rain was predicted.  And then, as if a sign from the Lord above, the rains would stop just in time for the festivities.  For weeks, we’ve been waiting for the Supreme Court of the United States to rule on the legality of same-sex marriage.  And when did it come down?  Friday, June 26th – two days before the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and on the eve of Gay Pride in San Francisco and New York City.  Timing is everything.

The not completely surprising ruling by SCOTUS led to lots of celebrating – including the White House being bathed in rainbow-colored lights.  Congratulatory Tweets came in from some of our queer Broadway icons, like Patti LuPone, Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, and even Liza Minnelli, who herself has been in two gay marriages.

Of course, it can’t all be good news.  While same-sex marriage was legalized around the country, two states have held out.  As of this writing, Louisiana and Mississippi have refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.  The Louisiana attorney general said that nothing in the Supreme Court ruling made the order “effective immediately”.  Mississippi’s attorney general echoed those sentiments – and then had his slave bring him another mint julep.
