Spacey Didn’t Come Out

“I’m coming out…no, wait…I’m going into makeup.”
Kevin Spacey sings from Sunset Boulevard during his Tony Awards opening number.
There were quite a few “coming out” jokes.  P.S.  He didn’t.

This column went out in the middle of the Tony Awards.  The sight of Andrew Rannells‘ HD-enhanced basket reminded me how much my readers enjoy the theatre – and all the charming people in it.  With the success of Kinky Boots, Cyndi Lauper is ready to tackle her next show.  And she’s certainly picked a doozy.  Working Girl told the story of a young girl with big dreams and big hair trying to make it out of the secretarial pool and into corporate America.  Since the movie came out in 1988 – Cyndi’s heyday – it sounds like a match made in heaven.

The musicalized version of Pretty Woman has a development workshop scheduled for this fall.  And in a stroke of luck (for them), my dear Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph.  They are looking at a late 2018 launch.

Sometimes workshops are done for a new show so prospective investors can see if it’s something they want to put money in.  But sometimes revivals of older shows get workshops, too.  My interest was piqued when I heard that an industry-only staged reading of the musical I Can Get It For You Wholesale took place this past week.  What do we really know about this show?  Other than Miss Marmelstein and that chair?  Nothing!  I’m mildly intrigued.
