Warhol & Capote

Once I returned stateside, I stopped in Massachusetts long enough to see the new play WARHOLCAPOTE at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge.  This play about Andy Warhol and Truman Capote was supposed to star Stephen Spinella and Leslie Jordan.  Alas, due to “unforeseen personal circumstances”, Leslie withdrew from the production.  His place was taken by Dan Butler – not what one would consider an effortless replacement, but it works better than anticipated.  While Warhol is somewhat a one-note character (as he was in real life), Capote goes on a journey which Butler commendably navigates.  If I were a betting man, I’d think the script – which is a work in progress – was not completely to Leslie’s liking.  As an evening of theatre, it’s provocative.  It needs a bit more depth, but I think it could develop into something special.  It’s running until October 13th.
