Our Ask Billy<\/strong> question comes from Freddie <\/strong>in Hawaii who writes, \u201cI just saw Ellen<\/strong>\u2019s new comedy special.  Was she really the first female comedian Johnny <\/strong>invited to the couch?  Not someone like Joan Rivers <\/strong>or Phyllis Diller<\/strong>?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true, the first time Ellen DeGeneres <\/strong>did stand-up on The Tonight Show<\/em><\/strong>, Johnny Carson <\/strong>waved her over to the sofa.  But she wasn\u2019t necessarily the first woman he invited over.  According to reports, when Roseanne <\/strong>made her first appearance on The Tonight Show<\/em> a year before Ellen, Johnny also waved her over\u2026but she was so scared, she just ran off the stage.  As to Joan and Phyllis, they were always on the show as guests \u2013 not to do stand-up.  So, they didn\u2019t have to be invited over to the couch \u2013 they were booked on the couch.<\/p>\n
