Since our last column was written on New Year\u2019s Eve, I wasn\u2019t able to tell you about Anderson Cooper <\/strong>and Andy Cohen <\/strong>on CNN<\/em>.  Not only was Andy almost arrested, but he almost took down the entire network with him in what I am calling Umbrella-Gate<\/em><\/strong>.  The Times Square Alliance <\/em>banned umbrellas from the area because\u2026well, because the world is insane.  I\u2019m not saying that you couldn\u2019t do some damage with an umbrella, but I\u2019m against banning anything that Mary Poppins <\/strong>uses to fly.  However, since it was pouring rain in New York, Andy began the telecast with a see-through plastic dome umbrella on the telecast \u2013 kinda like the ones your mom used to get for free with the purchase of L\u2019eggs<\/em>.  After 90 minutes of bickering back and forth and Andy welcoming being arrested, the Alliance<\/em> said if Cohen didn\u2019t close the umbrella, CNN <\/em>would be banned from future New Year\u2019s Eve telecasts.  Times have certainly changed \u2013 it took a photo with a Halloween mask for Kathy Griffin <\/strong>to get banned!<\/p>\n

The duo welcomed an in-person special guest \u2013 Faye Dunaway<\/strong>.  So, welcome to our first Fayewatch <\/em><\/strong>of 2019.  Faye\u2019s presence warranted the return of Cohen\u2019s umbrella.  \u201cI have to give you an umbrella because you look too clean and crisp,\u201d Andy gushed.  When asked if it was her first visit to Times Square for New Year\u2019s Eve, Faye cackled, \u201cOh, yes, absolutely.  It may be my last.  No, it\u2019s nice to be here.  We\u2019re in New York, for God\u2019s sake!\u201d  This \u201cinterview\u201d, such as it was, had a several great moments.  First, Anderson said one of his favorite movies was one Faye did with Robert Redford<\/strong>.  \u201cI\u2019m blanking on the name,\u201d said the newsman.  Cut to Faye, who looked like a Dunaway in the headlights \u2013 \u201cNow you\u2019re making me blank on it.\u201d  Talk about a gaggle of senior moments!  They continued talking about a movie neither of them could name.  Meanwhile, I\u2019m screaming at my TV, Three Days of the Condor<\/em><\/strong>!  Anderson finally remembered it, and Faye smiled through those store-bought teeth and repeated the name.  Priceless.  Then Anderson mentioned that The Academy <\/em>hadn\u2019t yet settled on a host for the Oscars<\/em>.  \u201cWhat about you?\u201d said Cooper.  Faye had a look on her face that basically said, \u201cLook, I can\u2019t remember the names of movies I\u2019ve BEEN in.  And, may I remind you of the last time I was on the Oscars<\/em>?  La La Land<\/em><\/strong>!\u201d<\/p>\n

Faye\u2019s main purpose for stopped by was to let the international viewing audience know that she would be back on Broadway <\/em>playing Katharine Hepburn <\/strong>in Tea at Five<\/em><\/strong> by my dear friend Matthew Lombardo <\/strong>(and kudos to Faye for mentioning his name on CNN <\/em>\u2013 writers usually get overlooked).  At this point, Cohen really stepped in it when he said, \u201cYou beat Katharine Hepburn for an Academy Award<\/em>, if I remember.\u201d  Faye peered at him and said, \u201cHow did you know that?\u201d  How indeed.  Dunaway got her first nomination for Bonnie and Clyde<\/em><\/strong> and lost to Hepburn.  When she won her Oscar <\/em>for Network<\/em><\/strong>, Hepburn wasn\u2019t nominated.  So, Andy, I\u2019m calling this one our first ever Faye-Pas<\/em><\/strong>.  To her credit, Faye didn\u2019t accept the compliment.  She simply said, \u201cI didn\u2019t, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
