Last week, I accompanied Jenifer Lewis <\/strong>to the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards<\/em><\/strong>. When asked how she felt, Jenifer said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m honored. I\u2019m honored to be honored.\u201d Now, who else could pull that off? Her award was presented by original Dreamgirls<\/em><\/strong> Sheryl Lee Ralph <\/strong>and Loretta Devine<\/strong>, along with Jenifer\u2019s daughter Charmaine<\/strong>. The other honorees were Regina Hall<\/strong>, KiKi Layne<\/strong>, and Amandla Stenberg<\/strong>. Some of the people in attendance were my dear Sherri Shepherd<\/strong>, Angela Bassett<\/strong>, Iyanla Vanzant<\/strong>, CCH<\/strong> Pounder<\/strong>, Regina King<\/strong>, Spike Lee<\/strong>, Billy Porter<\/strong>, Congresswoman Maxine Waters<\/strong>, and even Puff Daddy <\/strong>(who I was sitting next to). The event was hosted by Kelly Rowland<\/strong>, who remembered me from hosting LA Pride<\/em><\/strong>. How did this little white boy from Boston, Massachusetts end up in the middle of a gala event celebrating Black women? Dare to dream.<\/p>\n Despite the wattage of the room, Jenifer managed to weave her unique magic, steal the show, and touch upon a story we covered earlier. \u201cI was asked on the carpet so many times, \u2018What do you think, Miss Lewis?\u2019 I have no comment. Today is a day to celebrate. But this is what you will be hearing tomorrow.\u201d She then sang her latest song. \u201cBefore you lie to us, remember Rosa<\/strong> sat on that bus. Before you tell your tale, remember Mandela <\/strong>sat in that jail. Before you do anything, remember Dr. Martin Luther King<\/strong>. Before you connive and steal, I dare you to Google <\/em>Emmett Till<\/strong>.
