\nHearts of Gold<\/em><\/strong> concert.  Anyone surprised?  Hands?  Put those down \u2013 I did not say fists!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I left my first event somewhat perfunctorily in order to get to my next event.  Alas, the legendary Greek Theatre <\/em>is roughly 20 miles from UCLA \u2013 and on a Saturday night, that could take a good two hours.  But to celebrate the LA LGBT Center<\/em>\u2019s 50th<\/sup> Anniversary, it was worth the effort.  This gala was broken up into 10-year chunks.  I got there at the tail end of the \u201870s, so I missed Sia<\/strong>.  But I arrived in time to see Lily Tomlin <\/strong>and Jane Fonda <\/strong>share their long history with our community whilst having enormous difficulty reading the TelePrompTer<\/em>.  Turns out, the problem was a lighting issue which continued throughout the evening.  But nothing could dampen the comedy stylings of Kathy Griffin, who not only recounted her many appearances at The Center\u2019s Renberg Theatre<\/em>, but also bid adieu <\/em>to some less than politically correct terms (one of which was \u201csloppy pig bottom<\/em>\u201d \u2013 see the opening quote).  Highlights from the show were a mesmerizing performance by Melissa Etheridge<\/strong>, a touching Ty Herndon<\/strong>, a terrific Thelma Houston<\/strong>, and of course, my Play Mama<\/em>, Jenifer Lewis<\/strong>, closing the show as only she could.  You can get more information about the work being done at The Center <\/em>at LALGBTCenter.org<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
