The movie has already made history &#8211; its opening weekend was the biggest film launch of a <em>Broadway <\/em>adaptation. A number of you have wondered what other actors were up for roles in this musical. A few years after the show opened on <em>Broadway<\/em>, Hollywood was ready to film it. There was a deal with <em>Columbia <\/em>which would have starred <strong>Cher <\/strong>as the Witch, <strong>Robin Williams <\/strong>as the Baker, <strong>Goldie Hawn <\/strong>as his wife, <strong>Steve Martin <\/strong>as the Wolf, and (in a bit of whimsical casting) <strong>Danny DeVito <\/strong>as the Giant. After a closed reading, that project was abandoned. In 1997, <em>Columbia<\/em> revived the idea as a vehicle for <strong>Billy Crystal <\/strong>as the Baker, <strong>Meg Ryan <\/strong>as his wife, and <strong>Susan Sarandon <\/strong>as the Witch.
