My favorite part of the Super Bowl <\/em>is the commercials. This year, we had Molly Ringwald <\/strong>hawking avocados, Winona Ryder <\/strong>doing something in the snow, MC Hammer <\/strong>selling Cheetos<\/em><\/strong>, a Queer Eye<\/em><\/strong> pushing Pop Tarts<\/em>, Ellen <\/strong>and Portia <\/strong>extolling the virtues of Alexa<\/em><\/strong>, and a trio of Bostonians (Chris Evans<\/strong>, John Krasinski <\/strong>and Rachel Dratch<\/strong>) endorsing Hyundai<\/em><\/strong>. I was excited when I heard Sofia Vergara <\/strong>was in a commercial called, \u201cWhen We Come Together\u201d. Alas, it was nothing like I expected.<\/p>\n Then there was the spot for Sabra <\/em>hummus starring Kim Chi <\/strong>and Miz Cracker<\/strong>. Many media outlets reported that this was the first time drag queens appeared in a Super Bowl <\/em>commercial. Not true. Way back during the 2000 Super Bowl<\/em>, RuPaul <\/strong>starred in a commercial for WebEx<\/em><\/strong>, a video conferencing site. Since the supermodel of the world wasn\u2019t yet a household name, the commercial began with her saying, \u201cThis meeting is a real drag\u201d. It was widely reported that Planters <\/em><\/strong>was killing off Mr. Peanut<\/strong>. In a commercial that aired pre-Super Bowl<\/em>, we saw the mascot in a car accident, willingly falling to his death to save his two friends (Wesley Snipes <\/strong>and Matt Walsh<\/strong>). A follow-up commercial featuring his funeral ran just before halftime. At Mr. Peanut\u2019s burial, he was sent off by other famous mascots, including Mr. Clean <\/strong>and Kool-Aid<\/strong> Man<\/strong>. When the latter stood over the grave crying, \u201cOh, yeah\u201d, his tear seemed to resurrect the legume.
