When people look back on the 2020 Oscars<\/em><\/strong>\u2026well, God only knows what they\u2019ll think.  Here\u2019s my general thought \u2013 confusion.  Every time someone popped up around the theatre to introduce a segment, I was bewildered.  First off, I had no idea where to look.  It was like a celebrity version of Where\u2019s Waldo<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 minus the celebrities.  Who were these people?  I suppose using lesser performers made sense.  You couldn\u2019t have Diane Ladd <\/strong>hanging on for dear life from the rafters.  I will definitely remember some of the outstanding performances.  How fabulous was Cynthia Erivo <\/strong>wailing \u201cStand Up\u201d from Harriet<\/em><\/strong>?  Even better, how fabulous was Cynthia keeping her gaze on the camera circling her to the commercial break?  As great as she was and as great as the song was, I have to give it up to Elton <\/strong>\u2013 especially after his kick-ass rendition of \u201c(I\u2019m Gonna) Love Me Again\u201d.  Admittedly, he had to look at music and lyrics (it\u2019s not a song he\u2019s performed often), but it was touching to see him and Bernie Taupin <\/strong>win their first Oscar<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Let me give a warning to any future award show singers \u2013 don\u2019t go anywhere near Rita Wilson <\/strong>with a microphone.  She\u2019s got sheet music in her purse and is ready to hit the stage.  Chris Rock <\/strong>and Steve Martin <\/strong>showed how valuable comedians are to an awards show.  But, it\u2019s not as easy as you think.  The night before the Oscars<\/em>, the two were at The Comedy Store <\/em><\/strong>in Hollywood and tried out their routine \u2013 including several jokes which didn\u2019t make it to air.  I believe James Corden <\/strong>and Rebel Wilson <\/strong>are carrying the mantle of Bob Barker <\/strong>by reminding us to spay and neuter our pets.  I do have one question \u2013 do Maya Rudolph <\/strong>and Kristen Wiig <\/strong>have no gay friends?  Not even one?<\/p>\n

Without a doubt, the winner of the Faye Dunaway Award for Award Presentation <\/em><\/strong>is Diane Keaton<\/strong>.  My God, the only thing she didn\u2019t do was exclaim La La Land<\/em><\/strong>!  It\u2019s sad when Keanu <\/strong>is the coherent one.  On the flip side, Martin Scorsese <\/strong>always looks like he\u2019s having such a good time \u2013 even when he lost Best Director<\/em>.  Lastly, after the first award of the night, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if the Scientologists <\/em>had Tom Cruise <\/strong>on suicide watch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
