\n\u2013 <\/em>Spike Lee <\/strong>explains why he prematurely announced the winner of the Cannes Film Festival<\/em><\/strong>. 
\nHe was asked who the first award was going to and, instead, he said who won first place. 
\nPart of the problem is that he was asked in French!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I love a film festival.  It could be in Venice, Italy; Venice, California; or Venice, Uzbekistan.  Once the lights go down, it\u2019s just you and that little piece of celluloid projected on a screen which is sized in direct proportion to the prestige of the festival.  One of the hits of this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival <\/em><\/strong>is a biopic inspired by Celine Dion <\/strong>\u2013 except, since it is unauthorized, it is about a singer named Aline Dieu.  Aline<\/em><\/strong> stars Val\u00e9rie Lemercier<\/strong>, known as the Kristen Wiig <\/strong>of France.  Nope, not the Tina Fey<\/strong>, not even the Amy Poehler<\/strong>.  The film has been described alternatively as \u201cbrilliant\u201d, \u201chorrifying\u201d, \u201chilarious\u201d, and \u201cinsane\u201d.  My kinda movie.  Some of that reaction might be caused by the 57-year-old Lemercier playing Celine\u2026err, Aline\u2026starting at the age of five!  The critic from the venerable New York Times<\/em> said, \u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything quite like it.\u201d  You can almost see that in an ad.<\/p>\n

Another hit is a documentary which has been in the works for seven years: Cow<\/em><\/strong>, which is\u2026you guessed it\u2026shot from the perspective of a cow!  We follow this dairy cow through every momentous event in her life \u2013 with the exception of impregnation.  Cows, it turns out, have enormous difficulty looking over their shoulders.<\/p>\n

Neither of these is the most surprising hit to come out of Cannes.  That honor goes to Red Rocket<\/em><\/strong>, a film about a washed-up male porn star, played by Simon Rex <\/strong>\u2013 the subject of the first big scoop of this very column.  In early 1996, it was little Billy Masters <\/strong>who discovered that the MTV <\/em>VJ had a gay porn past.  And that, kiddies, not only put me on the map \u2013 it did wonders for Simon, who at the time was unemployed.  You\u2019re welcome \u2013 and can see that footage on BillyMasters.com<\/a><\/strong>.  We\u2019re told that the audience at Cannes gave the film a five-minute standing ovation, which would be impressive if Cow<\/em> hadn\u2019t gotten six full minutes!<\/p>\n
