{"id":70014,"date":"2021-09-05T22:41:23","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T05:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/?p=70014"},"modified":"2021-09-05T22:41:23","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T05:41:23","slug":"casting-trans-actors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/blog\/2021\/09\/05\/casting-trans-actors\/","title":{"rendered":"Casting Trans Actors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard the latest from <strong>Sir Cameron Mackintosh<\/strong>?&nbsp; When asked about casting trans actors, the theatrical producer said this: \u201cYou can\u2019t implant something that is not inherently there in the story or character, that\u2019s what I think.&nbsp; Just to do that, that becomes gimmick casting.\u201d&nbsp; This caused lots of chatter \u2013 with the loudest voice, happily, someone who it directly affected.&nbsp; <strong>Alexandra Billings <\/strong>said, \u201cI am an actor.&nbsp; I am Mame and I am Madame Rose.&nbsp; I am Miss Hannigan and I am Annie Oakley and I am Fantine.&nbsp; But I am these stories because I am part of the human fabric and no one has the right to take any of this away from me\u2026I am an actor, Mr. Mackintosh, not a gimmick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sir Cameron responded: \u201cI was recently asked by a journalist if I would consider making the character of Mary Poppins (not the actor playing the role) a transgender woman.&nbsp; Unfortunately, my answer has been misinterpreted to suggest that I am opposed to casting a transgender performer to play the role.&nbsp; This is absolutely not true.&nbsp; I meant only that I would not as a producer disregard the author <strong>P.L.
