{"id":90105,"date":"2022-02-07T03:31:59","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T11:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/?p=90105"},"modified":"2022-02-07T03:31:59","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T11:31:59","slug":"jamie-and-celie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/blog\/2022\/02\/07\/jamie-and-celie\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamie and Celie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I saw the national tour of the musical <strong><em>Everybody\u2019s Talking About Jamie<\/em><\/strong> at LA\u2019s <em>Ahmanson Theatre<\/em>.&nbsp; Let me first note that proof of both vaccines AND the booster were required for entry.&nbsp; I\u2019ve seen the documentary about the real-life Jamie, so I was well familiar with the story.&nbsp; Obviously I understand that things change during the \u201ccreative process\u201d of making a musical.&nbsp; But some of the choices made certain characters completely unlikeable and unbelievable.&nbsp; This caused the many twists and turns of the beleaguered plot to seem unfathomable.&nbsp; The music is fine but unmemorable.&nbsp; The performers appeared to be phoning it in \u2013 but I saw it on a Tuesday night.&nbsp; I\u2019m glad I went, but I cannot give it much of an endorsement beyond that.&nbsp; If you can see it without spending too much effort (or money), then go.&nbsp; In case you\u2019re wondering, I\u2019ve since seen the film version which was only slightly better.<\/p>\n<p>The long-discussed film adaptation of the musical version of <strong><em>The Color Purple<\/em><\/strong> has picked up some traction.&nbsp; As predicted, <strong>Fantasia Barrino <\/strong>will repeat her stage triumph of Celie (curiously, I\u2019m told <strong>Cynthia Erivo <\/strong>\u2013 the <em>Tony<\/em>-winning Celie on <em>Broadway <\/em>\u2013 was not even considered).&nbsp; Hot off her turn chewing scenery in <em>NBC<\/em>\u2019s <strong><em>Annie Live!<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Taraji P.
