\n\u2013 <\/em>Darlene Love <\/strong>celebrates Mariah <\/strong>losing her bid to trademark the term Queen of Christmas<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did you know that Billy<\/strong>\u2019s hometown gave birth to not one but two holiday ditties?  Most evidence points to Jingle Bells<\/em><\/strong> being written by James Lord Pierpont <\/strong>in Medford, Massachusetts.  We\u2019ll just skim over the fact that it was first performed in a minstrel show and, instead, tell you this little-known fact \u2013 it was written for Thanksgiving.  And that leads us to the second holiday song to come from my modest hamlet.  I don\u2019t know how popular it is around the country, but I grew up with Over the River and Through the Woods<\/em><\/strong>, written by Lydia Maria Child<\/strong>.  In school, we sang all four stanzas.  It wasn\u2019t until the pandemic that I actually walked the roughly five-block route Miss Child describes to her grandparents\u2019 house.  She writes, \u201cThe horse knows the way to carry the sleigh, through the white and drifted snow\u201d.  I\u2019m not convinced that horse actually knew the way, because I walked that route in only two stanzas!  And here\u2019s another fun fact \u2013 I have certain attributes that have been compared to a horse.<\/p>\n

Attention, everyone \u2013 Mariah Carey <\/strong>is NOT the Queen of Christmas<\/em>.  Although Mimi filed to trademark the term, her application was, as Suze Orman <\/strong>used to say, \u201cDenied\u201d.  She also attempted to trademark the phrases Princess of Christmas<\/em><\/strong> and Christmas Princess<\/em><\/strong>.  Those were also (say it with me) \u201cDenied\u201d!  This, of course, is good news to the longest-reigning Queen of Christmas \u2013 Darlene Love!  The Queen is dead, long live the Queen!<\/p>\n

While promoting her rather curious NBC <\/em>special Dolly Parton\u2019s Mountain Magic Christmas<\/em><\/strong>, the superstar took umbrage when someone called her the Queen of Christmas<\/em>.  \u201cNow, don\u2019t you say that.  I\u2019m not going to compete with Mariah,\u201d said Dolly.  \u201cI love her.  You think of Christmas, you think of Mariah.  I\u2019m happy to be second in line to her.\u201d  Carey returned the compliment via social media.  \u201cDolly, let\u2019s settle this one\u2026You are the Queen of Everything!  The Queen of the World, The Queen of Christmas, The Queen of Mine!!  Love you!!!!\u201d  Parton, who obviously enjoys having the last word, responded with, \u201cI will always love you\u201d.<\/p>\n

By the by, Carey has joined the producing team of the new Broadway <\/em>musical based on the film Some Like It Hot<\/em><\/strong>.  \u201cTo see how this show continues to expand on the film\u2019s legacy \u2013 pushing boundaries, promoting inclusion, celebrating diversity \u2013 I\u2019m proud to help bring Some Like It Hot <\/em>for today\u2019s world to new audiences.\u201d  This stage version of the classic film (not to be confused with the 1972 musical version, Sugar<\/em><\/strong>), has been written by the talented twosome behind the hit Broadway <\/em>musical Hairspray<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Marc Shaiman <\/strong>and Scott Wittman<\/strong>.   It opens on Broadway <\/em>next week, and is poised to be the event of the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
