Given what I\u2019ve written thus far, my fondness for the First Amendment <\/em>is pretty well documented.  This right should protect all people \u2013 just like I have the right to ignore them.  Alas, that did not extend to Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong>, who was \u201cindefinitely suspended\u201d by ABC<\/em>\/Disney<\/em>, which is known to protect rights of most critters \u2013 from singing crickets to pesky rodents (but don\u2019t get me started on rabbits and bears in the Old South!).   The issue came to a head when the Chairman of the FCC<\/em>, Brendan Carr<\/strong>, threatened ABC<\/em>.  \u201cOver the years, the FCC <\/em>has developed a body of case law on that and has suggested that most of these late night shows, other than SNL<\/em><\/strong>, are bona fide <\/em>news programs\u201d.  Of course, anyone getting their news from Michael Che <\/strong>and Colin Jost <\/strong>has bigger problems than can be dealt with within the confines of this column.<\/p>\n

Predictably, all hell broke loose throughout the broadcast landscape \u2013 with the sole exception of The View<\/em>.  On ABC<\/em>\u2019s flagship daytime chat show, the subject never came up.  There was a good reason for that.  The View<\/em> holds a unique place in the television landscape since it straddles both the entertainment and the news divisions \u2013 much like David Muir <\/strong>straddles…well, let\u2019s not even go there.  Make no mistaken, Carr has the ladies in his sights.  \u201cPotentially I would assume you can make the argument that The View <\/em>is a bona fide <\/em>news show, but I\u2019m not so sure about that, and I think it\u2019s worthwhile to have the FCC <\/em>look into whether The View <\/em>and some of the programs that you have still qualify as bona fide <\/em>news programs.\u201d  While the show is produced by ABC<\/em> News<\/em>, all of the anchors have contracts with the entertainment division of the network (the sole exception was the late Barbara Walters<\/strong>, who always worked for ABC<\/em> News<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
