The Broadway <\/em>production of Chicago<\/em><\/strong> likes to rotate people in and out of the role of Roxie \u2013 typically in between Charlotte d\u2019Amboise <\/strong>appearances (she\u2019s played Roxie over 2,500 times).  Of course, our pal Roz Ryan <\/strong>has played Matron \u201cMama\u201d Morton close to two thousand times.  And now, they\u2019re welcoming a new and not particularly matronly Mama.  Our very own Alex Newell <\/strong>will join the Broadway <\/em>cast on November 17th<\/sup>.  Newell, of course, made history as the first openly non-binary performer to win an acting Tony <\/em>back in 2023 for Shucked<\/em><\/strong>.  This isn\u2019t one of those hit-and-run gigs.  Alex will be playing Mama through the holidays and depart on January 11th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Following up on a trend I noted in a recent column, Ben Platt <\/strong>has announced a residency.  He\u2019ll be playing the Ahmanson Theatre <\/em>in LA.  From December 12th<\/sup> through the 21st<\/sup>, he\u2019ll do 10 performances.  I remember when a residency was weeks or months.  I guess technically this is a residency \u2013 but I still say it\u2019s on the cusp.<\/p>\n

Rather than tour with her holiday show, this year Mariah Carey <\/strong>will have a \u201cresidency\u201d of her own…in Las Vegas.  Mariah Carey\u2019s Christmastime in Las Vegas<\/em><\/strong> will also run for 10 performances at the Dolby Live <\/em>from November 28th<\/sup> through December 13th<\/sup>.  If you go, please do me a favor.  I\u2019ve been concerned for Mariah\u2019s well-being.  In the past, I\u2019d note that she\u2019d wear dresses that were about five sizes too small.  This required her to kinda shuffle around \u2013 because if she took a normal-size step, she\u2019d burst out of her outfit and take out the first three rows.  Lately I\u2019ve noticed that her head no longer moves.  It\u2019s not like she\u2019s had bad Botox<\/em>.  It\u2019s more like she\u2019s got a stiff neck.  For her to turn her head, she has to start at her toes and work her way up.  So, if you see her, report back to me.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re getting the best Christmas gift courtesy of the BBC <\/em>\u2013 a reunion of Jennifer Saunders <\/strong>and Joanna Lumley<\/strong>!  Ever since the Absolutely Fabulous Inside Out<\/em><\/strong> special in 2024, the consensus is that we\u2019d seen the end of the gruesome twosome.  Well, think again.  Alas, they won\u2019t be reprising their AbFab<\/em> characters.  Joanna is a regular on the BBC <\/em>series Amandaland<\/em><\/strong>, which is a sequel to Motherland<\/em><\/strong> (which I realize doesn\u2019t clear up anything for you Yanks!).  Lumley plays Amanda\u2019s glamorous and oppressive mother, Felicity.  For the Christmas special, they will be visited by Felicity\u2019s sister, Joan, played by Miss Saunders.  The character is described as \u201ca ball of country-living, enthusiastic upper-class bluster \u2013 very different from Felicity\u201d.  One can only assume hilarity will ensue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
