{"id":95288,"date":"2026-07-19T21:18:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T04:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/?p=95288"},"modified":"2026-07-19T21:18:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T04:18:04","slug":"jellicle-mary-cheyenne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/blog\/2026\/07\/19\/jellicle-mary-cheyenne\/","title":{"rendered":"Jellicle, Mary, Cheyenne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite all the awards and attention <strong><em>Cats: The Jellicle Ball<\/em><\/strong> has received, the <em>Broadway <\/em>production has posted a closing notice.&nbsp; While the notice was announced by Lord <strong>Andrew Lloyd Webber <\/strong>himself, he\u2019s also the one complaining about it.&nbsp; The show was supposed to run until January 17<sup>th<\/sup>, but Lord Andy says it will prematurely close on August 8<sup>th<\/sup>.&nbsp; \u201cWhat is happening in front of all who care about the <em>Great White Way <\/em>breaks my heart.&nbsp; One of the last things <strong>Hal Prince <\/strong>said to me was that it broke his heart that it was impossible for new or daring work to be originated on Broadway anymore.\u201d&nbsp; That\u2019s a whole lotta heartbreak for one sentence.&nbsp; ALW continues: \u201cThe truth is that, for any show, it makes practically no financial sense to come to <em>Broadway <\/em>with things as they are.&nbsp; Creators, writers, and directors have been forced to take minimal royalties from new shows, often surviving on a fixed weekly fee rather than a royalty.&nbsp; It makes it impossible for young creatives to make a living from theatre alone.&nbsp; Investors count themselves fortunate indeed if they see a portion of their money back.\u201d&nbsp; I would hope Andy isn\u2019t implying that he is on the brink of food stamps.&nbsp; He ends by saying, \u201c<em>Broadway <\/em>is in dire danger of rivaling Hollywood\u2019s empty soundstages with increasingly dark theatres.\u201d&nbsp; Not that it\u2019s germane to this conversation, but Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s net worth hovers around $1.2 billion.&nbsp; Not bad for minimal royalties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/colorbar1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-568\" src=\"http:\/\/www.billymasters.com\/custom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/colorbar1.gif\" alt=\"colorbar1\" width=\"500\" height=\"1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Someone who is doing quite well in the theatre is <strong>Cole Escola<\/strong>.&nbsp; The brains behind <strong><em>Oh, Mary!
