I\u2019m sure my issues with the term \u201cresidency\u201d have been duly noted.  But Jennifer Holliday<\/strong>\u2019s Palm Springs concerts qualify.  She will be appearing at Oscar\u2019s <\/em>on November 20, December 18, January 22, February 27, March 20, and April 24.  Six shows, six months.  Yeah, it\u2019s residency adjacent.  She\u2019ll be ably assisted at the piano by Michael Orland<\/strong>, who can tinkle my ivories anytime (and has).  Grab your tix at OscarsPalmSprings.com<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Remember all that hoopla about Cyndi Lauper<\/strong>\u2019s retirement?  Well, like The Go-Go\u2019s<\/em><\/strong>, she\u2019s actually retired from touring.  And I guess a Las Vegas residency doesn\u2019t count.  Cyndi will be playing The Colosseum <\/em>at Caesars<\/em> Palace<\/em> February 19-27 and September 3-11.<\/p>\n

Typically I don\u2019t report on high school theatre, but bear with me.  Little Shop of Horrors<\/em><\/strong> at the South Grand Prairie High School <\/em>in Texas has been cancelled after a girl was cast as Seymour.  This student had apparently played both female and male roles in the past without issue (including playing Jack in Into The Woods<\/em><\/strong>).  For some reason, she was asked to step aside and take one of the traditionally female roles.  She declined.  \u201cI was frustrated because I had earned a role and I worked hard for it, and I wasn\u2019t allowed to play it.\u201d  The students stood by their classmate and will now perform Frozen<\/em><\/strong> instead.  I bet she\u2019ll make one helluva Kristoff…or Olaf!<\/p>\n

The cast of the 2016 revival of Falsettos<\/em><\/strong> recently reunited for a special one-night-only performance at Carnegie Hall <\/em>to benefit The BroadwayEveryDay Foundation <\/em>and Family Equality<\/em>.  It sold out in seconds.  A second performance was added for November 2nd<\/sup>, also at Carnegie Hall<\/em>.  Again, it sold out.  A third performance is now scheduled for February 8th<\/sup>, again at Carnegie Hall <\/em>(that\u2019s gonna require a whole lotta practicing).  They\u2019re even taking it on the road and will play the London Palladium <\/em>for 4 performances in February (the UK shows are not benefits).  If you cannot wait or can\u2019t get to one of these many shows, the concert can be seen on BroadwayHD<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Another Broadway <\/em>show is celebrating a special anniversary.  On the day this column comes out (October 26th<\/sup>), there will be a special 30th<\/sup> anniversary concert performance of Rent<\/em><\/strong> which will benefit Broadway Cares\/Equity Fights AIDS<\/em>.  It will take place on the stage of Broadway<\/em>\u2019s Richard Rodgers Theatre <\/em>and feature what is described as \u201coriginal cast members and a bevy of special guests\u201d.  I\u2019m not exactly sure what that means \u2013 \u201cbevy\u201d being one of those terms open to interpretation.  While the performance sold out long ago, it will be livestreamed until 11PM Eastern on Tuesday, October 27th<\/sup>.  Check it out at BroadwayCares.org<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
