Fayewatch and Dolly
Brace yourselves. It’s time for another Fayewatch. In this story, Miss Dunaway has a supporting role – which is a step up from being unemployed. This leading lady of the story is Dolly Parton. After 9 to 5 and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Dolly was up for the role of Selena in Supergirl – the role that was ultimately played by Faye! Back in 1982, Parton told Entertainment Tonight, “There’s a part, a starring role, of a witch…She’s funny, and she’s magical, and she’s all this and that – and I might do it.” So, what went wrong? “I’ll have to go to London for three months, so it depends on if I want to leave home for that much, if I want to be a witch that bad. I think going from a secretary to a madame to a witch wouldn’t be bad.” Years later, she revealed why she turned down the role. “I got offered $7 million several years ago to play the part that Faye Dunaway played in Supergirl. I was kind of insulted. I was impressed with the money but I said, “Why are you asking me to play an evil witch? Do I come across as an evil witch to you?” Presumably Faye Dunaway, who is impossible to insult, had no problem playing an evil witch. But I suspect she didn’t get anywhere near Dolly’s $7 million paycheck. In fact, the actual Supergirl in the film, Helen Slater, was paid a whopping $70K.
