Can Non-Gays Cruise?

Speaking of lesbians and The CW, I previously told you that Ruby Rose had been cast by the network as Batwoman, and that the character was/would be a lesbian.  This news spawned several online campaigns from people criticizing her casting since she is not a lesbian.  Except she IS a lesbian.  “I came out at 12.  And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that?  I didn’t change.”  Then people started complaining that Rose wasn’t Jewish – because Batwoman’s alter ego is Jewish.  Finally, some said that Rose isn’t a good enough actress, which begs the question – how good an actress do you have to be on The CW?  Rose had enough of the abuse and quit Twitter.  “I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects.  If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”

The good news – Disney’s first openly gay character appears in the upcoming live-action film, The Jungle Cruise.  The bad news – the guy playing the gay character is straight.  The upshot – people are pissed.  Because apparently acting is no longer “acting”.  Only Jews can play Jews, lesbians can play lesbians, etc.  It was not long ago that gay actors bemoaned the opportunities to play straight parts.  “I’m an actor – I can play any role,” they’d say in frustration.  I do hope they all remember this when the only roles available to them are the gay best friend.
