With all the craziness going on in the world, why is everyone talking about a pizza place that won’t cater a gay wedding?  Perhaps a better question is this – how many gay people are serving pizza at a wedding?  Memories Pizza in Walkerton, Indiana, is a small family-owned establishment.  Because of Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a reporter was asking local business owners how they would deal with a hypothetical situation regarding gay marriage.  A member of the O’Connor family said that they would not provide pizzas for a gay wedding – “We are a Christian establishment.”  Obviously that’s not good, but it’s been pointed out that they have never refused service to anyone – including gay people.  Since this interview, they’ve been deluged with protestors, death threats, and the like – which I don’t think is particularly Christian.  Jessica Dooley, an assistant softball coach, Tweeted, “Who’s going to Walkerton, IN to burn down #memories pizza w me?”  She’s since been suspended.

Because of the uproar, the family went into hiding and temporarily shut down the joint.  It appears that they have been somewhat manipulated by people looking for a face against gay marriage.  You see, a contributor to Glenn Beck‘s website who is also a political operative started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the beleaguered O’Connor family.  From that point onward, right wing pundits promoted the effort passionately and over $800K was raised in two days!  Someone on the left started a similar GoFundMe campaign called Love Is Stronger Than Hate, with a goal of $1 million to be donated to the Human Rights Campaign.  So far, they’ve raised $550.
